Extra Credit: What To Do About Dihydrogen Monoxide?

by Sam Harrelson on January 31, 2010

2 Points Extra Credit for the best response (click the link to learn more about Dihydrogen Monoxide)…

Facts About Dihydrogen Monoxide: “Dihydrogen Monoxide (DHMO) is a colorless and odorless chemical compound, also referred to by some as Dihydrogen Oxide, Hydrogen Hydroxide, Hydronium Hydroxide, or simply Hydric acid. Its basis is the highly reactive hydroxyl radical, a species shown to mutate DNA, denature proteins, disrupt cell membranes, and chemically alter critical neurotransmitters. The atomic components of DHMO are found in a number of caustic, explosive and poisonous compounds such as Sulfuric Acid, Nitroglycerine and Ethyl Alcohol.”

Dihydrogen monoxide:
- is called “hydroxyl acid”, the substance is the major component of acid rain.
- contributes to the “greenhouse effect”.
- may cause severe burns.
- is fatal if inhaled.
- contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape.
- accelerates corrosion and rusting of many metals.
- may cause electrical failures and decreased effectiveness of automobile brakes.
- has been found in excised tumors of terminal cancer patients.

Despite the danger, dihydrogen monoxide is often used:
- as an industrial solvent and coolant.
- in nuclear power plants.
- in the production of Styrofoam.
- as a fire retardant.
- in many forms of cruel animal research.
- in the distribution of pesticides. Even after washing, produce remains contaminated by this chemical.
- as an additive in certain “junk-foods” and other food products.

What should we do about the Dihydrogen Monoxide problem? Should Dihydrogen Monoxide be banned?

Make sure to use your brain :)

I think it should be banned if all it does is harm to earth and its inhabitants. All of the Dihydrogen Monoxide should be removed from every part of the world and be put in something like a vault. If it is used in every day things that we use and eat then all people will get cancer. It should be banned from use in factories because its just hurting the workers over all I think it should be banned across the world.

Sam Harrelson January 31, 2010 at 4:34 pm

Would we be able to live without Dihydrogen Monoxide, though?

Arjun Patel January 31, 2010 at 4:43 pm

yes we could find different methods and substances to do the work that Dihydrogen Monoxide does in the things that are in use.

Sam Harrelson January 31, 2010 at 5:00 pm

Hmm… that would be really difficult. Think we could afford to do that?

Arjun Patel January 31, 2010 at 5:04 pm

yes obama spends enough money on other things

Arjun Patel January 31, 2010 at 5:05 pm

spends our taxes

I think we should ban Dihydrogen Monoxide because if its base is highly reactive, can mutate DNA, disrupt cell membranes, and denature proteins. All this things can harm humans and disrupt the natural cycle. I think that we should find a way to freeze or dispose of this chemical safely. If no one in the world was allowed to use it would save more lives than just the people inhaling it. It says it is used in nuclear power plants and with out it we may not be able to create nuclear weapons. Which if no one could cause that much destruction it would help reduce the deaths in war and Obama could put a check (on his to do list)beside the issue of worrying about our enemies having nuclear weapons. It would also make the sports field a little more fair…it says it is used to make elite athletes perform better. This deadly chemical is also said to be used in some community pools and day cares for sanitary conditions. I am sure that if we remove this chemical (safely), we may be able to find other extreme methods of cleaning. As for the other purposes… I do not find a type of steroids or nuclear weapons completely necessary.

no i change my answer it should only be usable by the govenment

Arjun Patel January 31, 2010 at 5:18 pm

Also kelly it says a nucler powerplant which makes power not nukes

Kelly Ruffing January 31, 2010 at 5:20 pm

O my bad :(

Arjun Patel January 31, 2010 at 5:21 pm

yeah

Kelly Ruffing January 31, 2010 at 5:22 pm

it says that it is used in chemical weapon manufacture so my point is still proven ….just not nuclear weapons

Arjun Patel January 31, 2010 at 5:26 pm

people wouldn’t be able to do harm to other people in prisons or to animals

Kelly Ruffing January 31, 2010 at 5:32 pm

if it was taken out of the list of options to help treat a kidney failure patient it would help prevent the failure of other vital organs

Arjun Patel January 31, 2010 at 5:38 pm

no i dont change my answer with “no i change my answer it should only be usable by the govenment”

You’re both missing very important about Dihydrogen Monoxide (think about the name)!

Kelly Ruffing January 31, 2010 at 5:42 pm

it is a type hydrogen so we need it to breath

Sam Harrelson January 31, 2010 at 5:43 pm

Getting warmer…

Kelly Ruffing January 31, 2010 at 5:46 pm

on a site it says it is water

Sam Harrelson January 31, 2010 at 5:47 pm

…so…

Kelly Ruffing January 31, 2010 at 5:47 pm

it is water b/c its chemical make up is 2 hydrogen 1 oxygen…thats weird

Kelly Ruffing January 31, 2010 at 5:48 pm

we can’t live without it

Sam Harrelson January 31, 2010 at 5:48 pm

…and there you go. trick question!

DIhydrogen (2 hydrogens) MONoxide (1 oxygen) = water :)

Kelly gets the 2 points… thanks for playing everyone!

Kelly Ruffing January 31, 2010 at 5:50 pm

haha i knew you could die if you drank to much but it is weird that they describe it as something that is killing our planet and us..

Sam Harrelson January 31, 2010 at 5:52 pm

Yep, it’s a fun “hoax” that a few grad students made to point out why we need to know chemistry!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dihydrogen_monoxide_hoax

Kelly Ruffing January 31, 2010 at 5:53 pm

wow.. didn’t see the hoax at the end

West February 2, 2010 at 1:47 pm

but if it’s fatal, why is it in junk foods?

West February 2, 2010 at 1:48 pm

i’m just kidding. but if it was a real problem then that question i said is a good one
