Dmitri Mendeleev: Father of periodic table
Periods: Horizontal rows on periodic table. Arranged by atomic number.
Groups: Vertical columns on periodic table. Elements in groups have similar properties.

Group 1 = Alkalines, very reactive
Group 2 = Rare Earth Elements
Group 17 = Halogens
Group 18 = Noble (Inert) Gases, not reactive, do not form compounds (normally)

The number of electrons in the outer electron orbit determines chemical properties of an element (reactivity, stability)
