xbox periodic 2

It’s a long weekend and we’re all busy enjoying the cooler weather, but if you get a chance to do this week’s homework early, there’s a little added bonus for you.

For 1/4 of a point, leave a comment here (or if you’re reading this on our Facebook page, you can leave a comment there) about what you found interesting in this week’s section of our book and why. Also include a link to a webpage, video, online presentation, image, mp3, etc that is connected (in some way) to your interesting topic.

As usual, be creative!

You have until Monday September 7 at 5:00 P.M. EST if you’d like to get the bonus.

(BTW, 1/4 of a point is about 2-3 percentage points on a quiz or test grade, so it’s worth your time!)

Otherwise, have a great weekend!

Here’s my homework:

I found that it was incredibly interesting how Dmitri Mendeleev took the known 63 elements and organized them into a chart that we still pretty much follow in 1869. This was way before we understood anything about protons, neutrons or electrons or much about how atoms form molecules which form compounds and so on.

To piece those 63 elements together using just imagination and flashcards is simply brilliant.

I was listening to my favorite podcast, Radiolab, two weeks ago on the way to school and they mentioned Mendeleev’s incredible breakthrough on the show. Their description makes Mendeleev’s organization of the first periodic table even more unbelievable.

Hey Halo three is gold not hydregen. Call of duty two would take that hydrogen being one of the first games.

Sam Harrelson September 6, 2009 at 10:40 pm

Completely agree, Matt.

Plus, Halo 2 was much better than Halo 3.

Just sayin’

Matt Henderson September 7, 2009 at 3:15 am

the only good thing about halo three was they brought back the aussult rifle from the first game.

I find how Dmitri created the periodic table interesting too. I was interested more in the Supernova. I think it is interesting how at the end of a big star’s life it explodes. It’s crazy how the temperatures go up to a billion degrees!!
I think it is also interesting that most scientists believe that the sun and the planets came from a HUGE supernova!!!

P.S. You guys are Halo obsessed!!

Bailey Verreault September 7, 2009 at 3:35 pm

I found it was interesting that a supernova star explodes producing temperatures up to 1 billion degrees Celcius! I thought it was interesting because 1 billion degrees Celcius is REALLY hot.

I found it interesting how nuclear fusion occurred to create new elements. When two atomic nuclei combine it forms an element on the periodic table. Also when helium builds up in a sun’s core other fusion reactions happen and it makes new elements. In this video it shows how a new star gets most of its energy from H and He. H and He are the main start of new elements inside of the star as fusion occurs. As fusion continues, many new elements are created. Once a star creates iron, this is the endpoint of the star. A supernova occurs and blows up the star. The supernova then creates the rest of the elements on the periodic table.

Sam Harrelson September 7, 2009 at 1:56 pm

I never could get into Call of Duty. I got frustrated at only lasting a minute in multi-player mode (my reflexes aren’t as good as they once were!).

Craig Lyon September 7, 2009 at 3:32 pm

The part that interested me the most was how mendelee prodicted that the 3 mixing elimens would be found. This interested me because it showed how math can tell us how we cane find stuff.
Ps. My mom doesent have an I phone 3g S son I can’t copy the lin glbut google the eliment song.
Pss. Sry for any missed spelled words I’m on the road and the I fone does net have a good spesll check.

I think its interesting how nature organized somewhat atoms in to categorys such as metals nonmetals and gasses acording to atomic #

Alex Wise September 7, 2009 at 7:57 pm

Craig Lyon September 7, 2009 at 9:38 pm

tucker September 8, 2009 at 1:51 pm

P.S cod 4 is way better then cod:waw!

Matt Henderson September 8, 2009 at 4:30 pm

Nice advantage taking of your friends Mr. Harrelson.

Melissa Church September 9, 2009 at 8:09 pm

I thought it would be really cool (but super-scary!!!) to see the sun become a supernova. Even though it might not be one, it would be amazing to se it. I wonder if it would be able to wipe out all the planets, even Pluto (I refuse to listen to those idiots/scientests who demoted Pluto. How would they like if I was all, “Nope, youre not a scientest any more. No, I don’t want to see your diploma. You’re a dwarf-scientest now.”?) or if it would only affect the planets closest to it.

Matt Henderson September 10, 2009 at 6:13 pm

They estimate just three mecury, venus, and earth then the sun wil expanded as far as it can get be for eropting vapourising every thing for miles and miles and miles around sad for mars. but the outer ring of planets will be roughfly ok.
